ঢাকা : কম্যুনিটি সার্ভিসে নিরন্তরভাবে কাজের স্বীকৃতি হিসেবে ‘কংগ্রেসনাল প্রক্লেমেশন’ ও ‘স্টেট অ্যাসেম্বলীর সাইটেশন’ গ্রহণের মধ্যদিয়ে ‘অ্যাসাল’র লং আইল্যান্ড চ্যাপ্টারের সভাপতি হিসেবে রোববার (১৩ এপ্রিল) বর্ণাঢ্য এক সমাবেশে গোলাম ফারুক শাহীন এবং গোটা কমিটির নেতৃবৃন্দ অভিষিক্ত হলেন।

আমেরিকায় দক্ষিণ এশিয়ান শ্রমিকদের অধিকার ও মর্যাদা নিয়ে ২০০৮ সাল থেকে কর্মরত ‘এলায়েন্স অব সাউথ এশিয়ান-আমেরিকান লেবার’ তথা অ্যাসাল’র জাতীয় কমিটির প্রেসিডেন্ট মাফ মিসবাহ নেতৃত্ব দেন শপথ গ্রহণ অনুষ্ঠানের। উল্লেখ্য, এটি হচ্ছে ২১তম চ্যাপ্টার। নিউইয়র্ক হতে শুরু অ্যাসালের কার্যক্রম এযাবত ১০টি স্টেটে বিস্তৃত হয়েছে ২১ টি চ্যাপ্টারের মাধ্যমে।

মাফ মিসবাহ এসময় বলেন, ১০ হাজারের অধিক সদস্য মূলধারার রাজনীতিতে জড়িয়ে কম্যুনিটির অধিকার ও মর্যাদার প্রশ্নে আপোসহীনভাবে সরব রয়েছেন। ইতিমধ্যেই অনেক নির্বাচনে অ্যাসালের সমর্থিতরা বিজয়ী হয়েছেন। বিজয়ের এই ধারায় লং আইল্যান্ডের এই চ্যাপ্টার অপরিসীম অবদান রাখতে সক্ষম হবে বলে আশা করছি।

যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় সঙ্গীতের মধ্য দিয়ে শুরু এ অনুষ্ঠানে শুভেচ্ছা বক্তব্য প্রদানের সময় গোলাম ফারুক শাহীনের বিগত বছরসমূহের কল্যাণ ও সেবামূলক কর্মকান্ডের প্রশংসা করার পরই মার্কিন কংগ্রেসের প্রক্লেমেশন শাহীনের কাছে হস্তান্তর করেন স্থানীয় কংগ্রেসম্যান টম সউজির প্রতিনিধি হিসেবে মেঘান বেল। একইভাবে প্রশংসার বাক্য উচ্চারণের মধ্যদিয়ে নিউইয়র্ক স্টেট অ্যাসেম্বলীর সাইটেশন শাহীনকে প্রদান করেন অ্যাসেম্বলীম্যান কাওয়ানি বি ও’ফ্যারো। এ সময় সকলে দাঁড়িয়ে গোলাম ফারুক শাহীনকে বিশেষভাবে অভিনন্দিত করেন।

ফার্মিংডেল সিটির নির্মল আনন্দদায়ক পরিবেশে অবস্থিত কোর্টইয়ার্ড ম্যারিয়ট হোটেলের বলরুমে অভিষেক উৎসবে সকলকে অভিভ’ত করে আমেরিকান স্বপ্ন পূরণের জন্যে ‘অ্যাসাল’র মত সংগঠনের অপরিহার্যতার আলোকে চমৎকার বক্তব্য উপস্থাপন করেছেন স্থানীয় ডিয়ারপার্ক হাই স্কুলের দ্বাদশ গ্রেডের ছাত্রী তনিকা শিকদার।

তিনি বলেছেন, বহুদিন ধরেই দক্ষিণ এশিয়ানরা কঠোর শ্রম দিচ্ছেন। ভোরে ঘুম থেকেই কাজ শুরু করেন এবং মধ্যরাতে ঘুমুতে যাচ্ছেন। স্বপ্নবাজদের অনেকেই ব্যবসা চালু করেছেন। ট্যাক্সি চালাচ্ছেন। শিক্ষকতা করছেন। চিকিৎসা-সেবায়ও খ্যাতি অর্জন করেছেন। তবুও দক্ষিণ এশিয়ানদের অধিকার ও মর্যাদা সুরক্ষায় মার্কিন প্রশাসন ততটা আন্তরিকতা প্রদর্শন করছে না। এহেন অবস্থা আর চলতে দেয়া যায় না। এখোন সময় হচ্ছে আমাদের। সময় এসেছে ঐক্যবদ্ধ হবার। এবং সে কারণেই আমি অ্যাসালের প্রয়োজনীয়তা আরো বিস্তারিতভাবে অবহিত করতে এসেছি।

হাই স্কুলের ছাত্র সংসদের প্রেসিডেন্ট তনিকা শিকদার বলেন, অ্যাসাল কেবলমাত্র এই সংগঠন নয়, এটি হচ্ছে একটি আন্দোলন। একটি পরিবার। অ্যাসাল হচ্ছে নতুন একটি কম্যুনিটি জেগে উঠার অন্যতম অবলম্বন, যাকে হৃৎপিন্ডও বলা যেতে পারে। আমরা যারা ন্যায় বিচার, মর্যাদাসম্পন্ন জীবন ব্যবস্থা এবং সমঅধিকারে বিশ্বাসী-সকলের জন্যেই অ্যাসাল অন্যতম অবলম্বন হিসেবে আবির্ভূত হয়েছে।

বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না, অ্যাসাল প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছে একটি লক্ষ্যকে সামনে রেখে: সকলকে সংগঠিত করা, কর্মক্ষম করা, শিক্ষার মাধ্যমে সচেতন করা, সারা আমেরিকার দক্ষিণ এশিয়ানদের ক্ষমতায়নে সহযোগিতার দিগন্ত প্রসারিত করা। আর এর অর্থ হচ্ছে-আপনারা, আমাদের অভিভাবকেরা, আমাদের শিশুরা, প্রতিবেশীরা, সহকর্মীরা। কারণ এই যুদ্ধে কাউকে দূরে রাখা চলবে না।

ছাত্র-সমাজের নেতৃত্ব প্রদানের অভিজ্ঞতার আলোকে তনিকা আরো বলেন, আমরা এখানে এসেছি শুধু গলাবাজির জন্যে নয়, কাজ করতে, প্রত্যাশার পরিপূরক সুফল আনতে। আমাদের লড়তে হবে ন্যায্য পারিশ্রমিকের জন্যে, কর্মস্থলে সম্মান পাবার পথ সুগম করতে, এবং অভিবাসনের ভঙ্গুর অবস্থার অবসান ঘটাতে।

তনিকার বক্তব্যকে অ্যাসালের প্রতিষ্ঠার অঙ্গিকারের পরিপূরক হিসেবে অভিহিত করে অ্যাসালের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও জাতীয় প্রেসিডেন্ট মাফ মিসবাহ উদ্দিনের আহবানে সকলে দাঁড়িয়ে তনিকাকে বিশেষভাবে অভিনন্দন জানান। আর এভাবেই নয়া কম্যুনিটি হিসেবে বহুজাতিক এ সমাজে বাংলাদেশী তথা দক্ষিণ এশিয়ানদের অবস্থানকে আরো মজবুত করার ক্ষেত্রে নতুন প্রজন্মের অংশগ্রহণ বৃদ্ধি পাবার একটি চিত্র দৃশ্যমান হলো বলে অনেকে মন্তব্য করেছেন। এরপরই লং আইল্যান্ড চ্যাপ্টারের কর্মকর্তাগণকে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়া হয়।

উল্লেখ্য, কয়েক বছর আগে এই চ্যাপ্টার গঠিত হলেও কেউই এলাকাবাসীকে তেমনভাবে সম্পৃক্ত করতে সক্ষম হননি।

বিএনপির ভারপ্রাপ্ত চেয়ারম্যান তারেক রহমানের নেতৃত্বাধীন পররাষ্ট্র সম্পর্কিত কমিটির সদস্য ও কম্যুনিটি অ্যাক্টিভিস্ট গোলাম ফারুক শাহীন তার কানেকশনকে ব্যবহার করে দক্ষিণ এশিয়ানদের অ্যাসালের সাথে নিবিড়ভাবে সম্পৃক্ত করতে সক্ষম হয়েছেন বলে বক্তারা উল্লেখ করেছেন।

শুভেচ্ছা বক্তব্য দিয়েছেন লং আইল্যান্ডের মসজিদ দারুল কোরআনের সভাপতি ফুয়াদ খান, স্টেট অ্যাসেম্বলীম্যান কাউয়ানি চীফ অব স্টাফ বায়রন ম্যাকক্রে এবং অ্যাসালের জাতীয় কমিটির মহাসচিব করিম চৌধুরী।

করিম চৌধুরীও বিরাজিত পরিস্থিতির আলোকপাত করে বলেছেন, সকল সেক্টরেই দক্ষিণ এশিয়ানরা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রাখছেন। শুধুমাত্র মূলধারার রাজনীতিতে তেমনভাবে সম্পৃক্ত হচ্ছি না। অথচ যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ভবিষ্যত আরো কতটা উন্নত হবে, অভিবাসী সমাজের অবদান কতটা গুরুত্ব পাবে-নির্দ্ধারিত হয়ে থাকে মার্কিন রাজনীতিকের দ্বারা।

করিম চৌধুরী বলেন, দীর্ঘদিন থেকেই আমরা অন্যদের বিজয়ী করতে কাজ করছি, অর্থ দিচ্ছি, কিন্তু নিজেরা প্রার্থী হচ্ছি না কিংবা আগ্রহ দেখাচ্ছি না। কেউ প্রার্থী হলে তার বিজয়ে তেমন আন্তরিকতা প্রদর্শন করি না। এহেন মনোভাব পরিহার করতে হবে। স্থানীয় এবং জাতীয় নির্বাচনে নিজেদের প্রার্থীকে জয়ী করতে হবে।

অ্যাসালের সদস্য-কর্মকর্তাগণের বাসায় রান্না করা নানা আইটেমের খাবার পরিবেশনের মধ্যদিয়ে এই অভিষেক উৎসবের সমাপ্তি বক্তব্যে মূলধারার রাজনীতিতে আরো জোরালো ভ’মিকায় অবতীর্ণ হবার প্রত্যাশা পূরণে সকলের সহযোগিতা অব্যাহত রাখার আহবান জানান গোলাম ফারুক শাহীন।

Good evening everyone,

My name is Tonika Sikder, and I am currently a senior at Deer Park High School and if

everything goes well, InshaAllah, I will be graduating as the Class President with the Class of

2025 this June. I am also the founder of the South Asian Culture Club at Deer Park High

School — a space I created to celebrate our stories, our traditions, and our voices.

As a student leader and community advocate, I have always believed deeply in the power of

representation and unity. That’s why I stand here today, asking for just 10 minutes of your time

to share the efforts of the people and the amazing work they do to uplift South Asians across

America.

So, without any further ado, let me begin by asking you a simple question: What does it mean to

be seen? To be truly recognized, respected, and valued — not just as individuals, but as a

community?

For far too long, many of us — South Asians in America — have worked tirelessly in the

shadows. We have been the early risers, the late shifters, the quiet workers and the tireless

dreamers. We have opened stores, driven cabs, taught classrooms, treated patients, and coded

the future — yet our voices are still too often unheard.

But that ends today. Because this — this is our moment. This is the time we rise together. And

that’s why I’m here to talk to you about the Alliance of South Asian American Labor —

ASAAL.

ASAAL isn’t just an organization. It is a movement – It is a family. It’s the heartbeat of a

community that refuses to be invisible. It's the call to action for all of us who believe in justice,

dignity, and equality — not just for ourselves, but for every single person who calls this

country home.

ASAAL was built with one mission: to organize, activate, educate, engage, and empower

South Asians across America.

That means you. That means me. That means our parents, our children, our neighbors, our

coworkers. Because no one gets left behind in this fight.

We’re not here just to talk. We’re here to take action — real action. Whether it's fighting for

equal pay, fair treatment at work, or immigration reform, ASAAL stands shoulder-to-

shoulder with those who’ve been told to sit quietly in the back. And we say, No more.

You are not alone. Many of us know what it feels like to walk into a room and be the only one

who looks like us. To speak with an accent and be judged before we even finish our sentence.

To work twice as hard for half the recognition. ASAAL says: We see you. We hear you. We’re

with you.

We are a community of teachers, nurses, drivers, engineers, small business owners, and

students. And when we stand united, we are unstoppable.

Because when one of us rises — we all rise.

The labor movement isn’t just a page from the history books — it’s happening right now. It’s

alive in the delivery driver who deserves safe conditions, the store clerk who deserves fair

wages, the caregiver who deserves respect.

ASAAL invites the entire South Asian diaspora to not just watch from the sidelines, but to step

into the arena. To lend your voice. To bring your story. To carry the banner of fairness,

justice, and hope — not just here, but around the globe.

Now let me tell you what ASAAL fights for, every single day:

    Educational, employment, and business opportunities for our communities.
    Equal pay and opportunity, no matter where you’re from or what your last name is.
    Immigration reform that understands the complexities and dreams of South Asians.
    Support for civil rights, immigrant rights, women’s rights, student rights — human

rights.

ASAAL isn’t just about labor. It’s about life — your life. Your voice. Your future.

And most importantly, ASAAL is about building bridges — between labor unions, faith

communities, civic groups, and the everyday people who just want a fair shot at the American

dream.

Too often, we’re told politics isn’t our space. ASAAL says: It is — and it always has been. We

are here to make sure South Asian Americans are not only at the table, but leading it — from

local townships to national platforms.
